Agricultural Association of Aegina
In light of the recent decisive developments regarding the future use of the iconic former Prison Building and the signing of Decision No. 747/18-05-2026 by the Regional Committee of Attica, the Agricultural Association of Aegina expresses its profound satisfaction, joy and sincere gratitude to the Region of Attica and the Ministry.
This joint effort finally marks the beginning of the implementation of a long-standing, fair and historic request of the agricultural community of our island.
The creation of the Aegina Pistachio Museum is not merely an agricultural matter.
It is a project of culture, knowledge and vision that will benefit not only producers, but the entire society of Aegina. From merchants and tourism professionals to restaurateurs, processors and every resident of the island, the Museum will become a living economic and cultural landmark operating throughout the year.
A Sacred Fruit, A Product of Ingenuity and Labour
For those of us who work the land, the pistachio is not simply a commercial product displayed on store shelves.
For Aegina, the pistachio is sacred.
It is a fruit inseparably linked to our identity and spirit, nourished by the sweat, sacrifices and dedication of previous generations, as well as by our own daily and unrelenting efforts. It is, in many ways, our living culture.
Its global uniqueness has already been recognised through the inclusion of the Aegina Pistachio in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage framework. It is worth recalling that the official nomination text submitted to UNESCO was drafted by the farmers of the island themselves, and that one of its principal aspirations was the creation of this Museum.
The international recognition of the Aegina Pistachio as the world’s leading nut is not a matter of chance. It is the result of intelligence, perseverance, hard work and the unwavering determination of generations of growers who have kept this cultivation alive despite adversity and the growing challenges posed by climate change.
Our Vision for the Museum, The Recognition of “Heroic Agriculture”
We envision the Aegina Pistachio Museum as an international beacon that will showcase the value and potential of our product, following successful examples such as the Mastic Museum of Chios and the celebrated promotion of pistachios in Bronte, Italy.
In such regions, agriculture carried out under challenging conditions has been recognised as “Heroic Agriculture.” Through strategic branding and cultural investment, local production has been transformed into a “green gold”, a premium product of international prestige.
The Aegina Pistachio deserves exactly the same level of recognition.
We want the Museum to become our most valuable ally in achieving:

Our pistachio is a sleeping giant, an extraordinarily versatile ingredient in both cuisine and pastry. It deserves to be presented internationally as a premium luxury product, capable of standing alongside some of the world’s most sought-after delicacies, such as truffles and caviar.

The pistachio offers much more than exceptional flavour. It is a genuine treasure of health, rich in valuable nutrients and natural benefits. The Museum can serve as a focal point for communicating this scientific value to a global audience.

There have been and continue to be critical voices.
However, we choose not to remain there.
We neither have the time nor the luxury to be consumed by sterile disputes that keep our island tied to the past.
The Agricultural Association of Aegina extends an open invitation for unity to all institutions, producers and citizens.
We call upon the entire island to work together, side by side, so that the Museum may become a reality as soon as possible.
It is our responsibility to preserve, protect and pass on this precious treasure of Aeginetan soil to future generations, guiding Aegina toward the progress, development and international outlook it deserves.
